Switching from Incandescent or Halogen to LED – What do you need?
Why switch to LED?
LED bulbs use up to 85% less energy than incandescent bulbs and up to 75% less than halogen bulbs. This results in significant savings on your energy bill. Additionally, LED bulbs have a longer lifespan (up to 50,000 hours) and generate less heat, making them safer.
Choose the right replacement LED bulb
The first step is to choose the right replacement LED bulb. Consider the following points:
-
Fitting: Ensure the LED bulb has the same fitting as your old bulb (e.g., E27, E14, GU10, MR16).
-
Wattage: LED bulbs consume fewer watts but provide comparable light output. Use the table below to find the right replacement:
-
Incandescent 40W -> LED 4-6W
-
Incandescent 60W -> LED 7-10W
-
Incandescent 100W -> LED 12-15W
-
Halogen 50W -> LED 5-7W
-
-
Light color: LED bulbs come in different color temperatures, from warm white (2700K) to cool daylight (6000K). Choose a color that suits your needs.
Do you need an LED dimmer?
If you want to dim your lights, you will need an LED dimmer. Check the minimum and maximum wattage of the dimmer and ensure it is compatible with LED bulbs.
When do you need an LED driver or transformer?
-
For 12V or 24V LED bulbs: Use an LED driver to convert mains voltage (230V).
-
For halogen bulbs with a transformer: Check if the existing transformer is compatible with LED. If not, replace it with an LED transformer to prevent flickering or malfunctions.
